On Sunday, October 13, the “World Fertilizer Day” is celebrated around the world to commemorate the Haber-Bosch technology, an invention that has made it possible to manufacture mineral fertilizers on a large scale from nitrogen in the air. From the National Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers (ANFFE), which represents the main fertilizer producers operating in Spain, we want to take advantage of this celebration to remember that:

- Fertilizers are necessary and they provide great benefits for human health, food production and the environment.

- Without fertilizers, millions of additional hectares would have to be cultivated worldwide to feed a constantly growing population, and food would be more expensive.

- Fertilizers contain naturally occurring nutrients and are exactly the same as those included in organic fertilizers, but in forms that can be more easily assimilated by plants.

- To calculate the amount of fertilizers to be applied to a farm, it is necessary to first know the nutrient content of the soil, the needs of the crop and the availability of organic matter.

- The efficient and rational use of fertilizers is not harmful to the environment, but, on the contrary, improves soil fertility and plant resistance to pests and diseases.

- The fertilizer industry is committed to decarbonization, carbon footprint reduction, innovation and sustainability of the agri-food sector.
